Why Do Candles Tunnel? Causes and Simple Fixes

A beautiful candle should soften a room slowly: a warm pool of light, a veil of fragrance, a small invitation to pause. When the flame burns a narrow hole straight down through the centre instead, it can feel disappointing - especially when so much untouched wax remains around the glass. So, why do candles tunnel? Usually, it comes down to how long the candle is allowed to burn, particularly the very first time it is lit.
What candle tunnelling looks like
Tunnelling is the name for the deep, narrow channel that forms around a candle wick while the wax at the edges remains solid. Rather than melting evenly across the surface, the flame follows the same central path each time it is lit.
It is not simply an aesthetic issue. A tunnel can leave a surprising amount of fragrance-rich wax unused, make the flame sit lower in the vessel, and reduce the cosy glow you expected from your candle. In a luxury glass vessel, it can also make the experience feel less considered than the ritual itself deserves.
The good news is that tunnelling is often preventable. It is rarely a sign that you have done anything terribly wrong. Candles are sensitive, atmospheric objects: the wax, wick, room temperature and burn habits all have a part to play.
Why do candles tunnel in the first place?
The most common cause is a first burn that is too short. Wax has a memory. When a candle is extinguished before the melted wax reaches close to the edge of the vessel, it is more likely to melt only to that same diameter on future burns. The flame then begins to travel downwards instead of creating a broad, even pool of wax.
For many container candles, the first burn needs enough time for the surface to melt almost all the way across. This may take two to four hours, depending on the size of the candle, the wax blend, the vessel and the conditions in your home. Always follow the guidance supplied with your specific candle, and do not burn for longer than the recommended maximum time.
A wick that is too small for the diameter of the candle can also contribute. The wick provides the heat that melts the wax, so a smaller flame may struggle to reach the outer edges. Conversely, an overlong wick can create a flame that burns too hot, produces soot or causes the candle to burn through its wax too quickly. Thoughtful wick selection is part of the quiet craft behind a well-made candle, but ongoing care at home still matters.
Your surroundings can influence the burn too. A candle placed in a draught, beside an open window, beneath a fan or in a cool corridor may develop an uneven flame. One side melts while the other stays firm. Moving it to a stable, level surface away from moving air gives the flame the calm it needs to work evenly.
The first burn sets the tone
The first lighting is worth treating as part of the experience, rather than a quick moment before you leave the room. Choose an evening when you can genuinely stay nearby. Trim the wick, settle the candle on a heat-resistant surface, and allow the warmth to build gradually.
Ideally, let the melt pool reach close to the sides of the vessel before extinguishing it. With larger candles, this can take time, which is why a smaller format may be the better choice for a short weekday ritual. There is a trade-off here: trying to force a large candle into a 30-minute burn is more likely to create tunnelling, while leaving any candle burning for too long is not advisable. Match the candle size to the time you have available.
This measured first burn also gives the fragrance space to unfold. Top notes lift first, then the heart of the scent warms into the room, before deeper notes bring a lingering sense of comfort. Rushing the burn can mean missing that gradual, atmospheric shift.
How to prevent a candle from tunnelling
Good candle care is simple and wonderfully unhurried. Before each burn, trim the wick to around 5 mm once the candle is completely cool. A neatly trimmed wick supports a cleaner, steadier flame and helps prevent mushrooming at the tip.
Keep the wax surface free from wick trimmings, spent matches and dust. Even small pieces of debris can affect the way the candle burns. Place it on a level, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, pets, children and anything flammable.
Then give each burn enough time to create an even melt pool, without exceeding the burn-time guidance on the label. For a candle that is wider than it is tall, this usually means planning a longer, more indulgent evening rather than lighting it in passing. Extinguish the flame with a snuffer if you have one, or gently dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it again using a suitable tool. This can minimise smoke and helps preserve a clean wick for next time.
Avoid moving a burning candle or moving it while the wax is still hot. The liquid wax can shift, set unevenly and create a slightly lopsided surface. Let it cool fully before replacing the lid or moving it to another room.
Can you fix a tunnelling candle?
Often, yes - especially when the tunnel is shallow and there is still plenty of wax remaining. The aim is to gently encourage the wax around the edges to soften so it can join the central melt pool.
One careful approach is to light the candle and loosely place a tent of aluminium foil over the top of the vessel, leaving a generous opening above the flame for heat to escape. The foil reflects warmth towards the outer wax, helping it melt more evenly. Never seal the candle, never leave it unattended, and keep the foil well away from the flame. Check it regularly and remove it as soon as the surface has levelled.
If the tunnel is very deep, the wick may become difficult to reach or may eventually drown in melted wax. At that stage, patience is safer than improvisation. Allow the candle to cool, remove only a little loose wax from around the wick if necessary, and relight it for a supervised, longer burn. Do not use sharp tools near the glass, and never attempt to melt wax with a direct heat source such as a hairdryer, hob or heat gun. Glass vessels can become dangerously hot or crack under uneven heat.
A candle that has reached the end of its safe life should not be burned down to the very base. Stop using it when around 1 cm of wax remains, or as directed on its care label. The vessel may still have a future as a small home for cotton buds, dried stems or treasured trinkets once it has cooled and been cleaned with care.
When tunnelling may not be your fault
Even with excellent care, a candle can occasionally behave differently from one burn to the next. Natural waxes, including eco soy wax, respond to changes in ambient temperature. A cold winter windowsill, a warm summer evening or a particularly draughty room can alter the melt pool.
Small-batch, hand-poured candles also carry the subtle character of their materials. A little frosting on soy wax, for example, is a natural visual change and does not mean the candle is faulty. Tunnelling, however, should be addressed early so the candle can continue to burn beautifully.
